Colombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella → South Coast → Colombo
First-time visitors, active comfort travellers, boutique-luxury adventurers
Year-round. October to April best for south coast and Sigiriya. Highlands rewarding in all seasons.
Moderate - Sigiriya involves approximately 1,200 steps; optional rafting requires basic swimming ability.
A private airport transfer into Colombo. An evening walk along Galle Face Green as the city comes alive – the sea breeze, the kite fliers, the street snack vendors and the Indian Ocean in the distance. A gentle, confident introduction to Sri Lanka.
The drive north takes around four hours, with the Dambulla Cave Temple as a natural midway stop. Five ancient rock-hewn shrines, gilded statues and murals spanning twenty centuries. An afternoon village visit near Sigiriya for local pottery and market interaction before settling into the forest lodge.
A sunrise climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress – the mirror wall, the frescoes, the summit panorama at first light. The afternoon hike to Pidurangala Rock delivers the view of Sigiriya itself rising above the surrounding jungle, at the quieter and less-visited alternative summit across the valley.
The drive south through Matale includes a stop at a spice garden – a genuinely interesting hands-on experience rather than a tourist stop. The afternoon visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and an evening walk along Kandy Lake close a day that covers the island’s cultural heartland at a rewarding pace.
A full day in Kandy opens with the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens – among Asia’s finest, 147 acres of orchids, giant Java figs and the famous palm avenue. An optional white-water rafting excursion on the Kelani River at Kitulgala makes for an exhilarating afternoon for those who want it. The evening Kandyan cultural performance closes the day theatrically.
The mountain drive from Kandy climbs steadily into the tea estates. A guided plantation walkthrough and tasting at a working estate along the route. Nuwara Eliya in the late afternoon – the colonial hill station, Gregory Lake in the evening light, and the particular pleasure of arriving somewhere that feels entirely unlike the rest of the island.
Board at Nanu Oya for the highland rail journey to Ella – three and a half hours of tea valley panoramas, cloud forest tunnels and the Nine Arch Bridge on final approach. Arrive in Ella in the afternoon, settle into the hilltop lodge, and explore the village’s cafés and walking paths at leisure.
A morning hike to Little Adam’s Peak, a visit to the Nine Arch Bridge timed to a train crossing, and an optional afternoon at Ravana Falls. Ella is best taken slowly – the food is good, the views are everywhere and there is always a terrace to sit on with the valley in front of you.
The drive southwest via Wellawaya takes around three and a half hours, the landscape dropping from the cool green highlands into the wider, warmer south. Afternoon beach relaxation or water sports at one of the southern beaches – Tangalle or Mirissa depending on the season. Sunset photography along the coast.
A full day to use as you choose. An optional Madu River mangrove boat safari is the finest nature excursion available from a south coast base – 90 minutes through canopy that closes overhead, monitor lizards on the roots, kingfishers in the branches. Evening sunset meditation and a seafood dinner to close.
The expressway drive north takes around two and a half hours. An optional short city stop or last-minute shopping in Colombo before the airport transfer.
