As the dry season reduces the Minneriya reservoir, wild elephant herds gather at the exposed lake edge in numbers that have no equivalent in Sri Lanka – hundreds of animals in plain sight in golden-hour light. During August and September, the concentration is at its peak. Outside the season, Kaudulla National Park nearby offers year-round sightings.
