The drive east via Monaragala and a lunch stop at Monaragala town – a genuinely local meal at a genuinely local pace. Afternoon arrival in Arugam Bay: a surf orientation session or a walk along the beach as the light fades.
A full surf day at Main Point. An afternoon boat trip on Pottuvil Lagoon – crocodiles, monitor lizards, kingfishers in the mangrove channels. Sunset along the east coast.
A second full day in the water. An optional cultural visit to the local fishing village for those who want a different kind of morning. An evening social gathering at the hostel.
The drive north takes around an hour and a half. An afternoon of snorkelling in the calm lagoon or paddling along the flat reef-sheltered shore. An evening beach walk and seafood dinner.
A full day at Pasikudah – the east coast’s finest flat-water bay. An optional boat excursion or a cultural village visit nearby. Sunset photography along the shoreline.
The drive north takes around two hours. A visit to Koneswaram Temple on the clifftop above Trincomalee harbour – one of Sri Lanka’s most dramatically positioned Hindu temples. Nilaveli Beach in the evening.
A morning boat trip to Pigeon Island Marine National Park – blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles and coral in clear shallow water. An afternoon at Nilaveli Beach. An evening social dinner.
The long drive south to Colombo takes around five and a half hours – an optional night bus or early evening arrival. Last-minute shopping in Colombo before the airport transfer.
