A full day in Kandy opens with the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens – among Asia’s finest, 147 acres of orchids, giant Java figs and the famous palm avenue. An optional white-water rafting excursion on the Kelani River at Kitulgala makes for an exhilarating afternoon for those who want it. The evening Kandyan cultural performance closes the day theatrically.

The mountain drive from Kandy climbs steadily into the tea estates. A guided plantation walkthrough and tasting at a working estate along the route. Nuwara Eliya in the late afternoon – the colonial hill station, Gregory Lake in the evening light, and the particular pleasure of arriving somewhere that feels entirely unlike the rest of the island.

Board at Nanu Oya for the highland rail journey to Ella – three and a half hours of tea valley panoramas, cloud forest tunnels and the Nine Arch Bridge on final approach. Arrive in Ella in the afternoon, settle into the hilltop lodge, and explore the village’s cafés and walking paths at leisure.

A morning hike to Little Adam’s Peak, a visit to the Nine Arch Bridge timed to a train crossing, and an optional afternoon at Ravana Falls. Ella is best taken slowly – the food is good, the views are everywhere and there is always a terrace to sit on with the valley in front of you.

The drive southwest via Wellawaya takes around three and a half hours, the landscape dropping from the cool green highlands into the wider, warmer south.
